AEMing for Inclusive Practices with Technology Enhanced Text and Book Adaptations
Date & Time: Thursday, April 27, 2023 1:00 PM - 3:45 PM ET
Location: Madison Bldg - Hanover

Inclusion is intended as a commitment to educate each learner, to the maximum degree possible, in the school and classroom they would typically attend. This should not end with placement in a "regular" classroom, but rather begin with opening the doors to participation as a member of the classroom and school community. It is a rarity in this day and age that a classroom is composed of learners with the same ethnicities, life experiences, learning styles and more. When we reflect on learner diversity as the foundation for the adaptations we make to be sure that the reading materials we provide students take into account learning, language, physical, sensory, and cultural differences. Dave Edyburn coined the term "cognitive rescaling" to describe adjusting the reading level or adapting the content for students who are English Language Learners, have print or intellectual disabilities, or need information cognitively rescaled for any reason. With the influx of a vast variety of productivity tools and online resources, every educator can now produce technology-enhanced digital text and book adaptations with readily available software tools and free internet downloads.

Whilst AT Network strives to adhere to the accepted guidelines and standards for accessibility and usability, it is not always possible to do so when linking to documents and sites outside of our site. We are continually seeking out solutions that will bring these other areas up to the same level of overall web accessibility. In the meantime, should you experience any difficulty in accessing the material, please don’t hesitate to contact us at matthewn@vt.edu.
