Maker Session - “Making” Books More Accessible
Date & Time: Tuesday, November 19, 2024 1:30 PM - 2:45 PM ET
Location: Alleghany 2108 (Upper Level )

Developing multimodal materials to introduce or extend literacy experiences sets the stage for literacy success. Alternative ways to organize, display and arrange, interact and respond to information produces greater understanding of concepts. Deliberate development of support materials to go along with books can enhance communication, social skills, reading, direction following, and fine motor skills using engaging and interactive activities that focus on designing an environment for literacy success. Participants will create a simple collection of adaptations to make books easier to see, to use (turning pages or holding), to remember, and to talk about. Participants will be equipped with a literacy planner along with tools and strategies via a digital toolkit.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will make five or more simple tools to enhance the reading experience.
  2. Participants will name five or more easily found materials that can be used to create tools to support the reading experience.
  3. Participants will list three or more digital resources to reference when adapting books.

Whilst AT Network strives to adhere to the accepted guidelines and standards for accessibility and usability, it is not always possible to do so when linking to documents and sites outside of our site. We are continually seeking out solutions that will bring these other areas up to the same level of overall web accessibility. In the meantime, should you experience any difficulty in accessing the material, please don’t hesitate to contact us at matthewn@vt.edu.
