Engaging our Learners and Educators: The Neurochemistry of Learning Face-to-Face

In this session, we will address "why" social engagement is a powerful fuel for learning. Findings of research in social neuroscience foster our ability to create supportive learning environments where social emotional engagement is a "fuel" for learning and emotional well-being across our neurodiverse students. The impact of neurodivergence on engagement will be discussed, particularly in relation to autistic learners. When our children are "invested," "independent" and "initiating" with their peers and teachers, they are learning. Participants will learn about the Social Engagement Ladder, a freely accessible tool for measuring learning engagement and identifying opportunities for enhancing engagement.

- Define three critical elements of active engagement that are predictive of our learner’s academic achievement and emotional well-being,
- Identify a rubric for measuring learner engagement in standards-based instruction and natural activities.
